Is There Additional Hardware or Software Required to Implement a Dual-Stack Network?

Switching to a dual-stack network, which supports both IPv4 and IPv6, is an effective and increasingly necessary way to prepare your business for the future. However, upgrades often come with the additional burden of updating hardware or software. So, is this the case when implementing a dual-stack network? Fortunately, there’s very little to add or change in most cases.

What is a Dual-Stack Network?

A dual-stack network is a setup that supports both IPv4 and IPv6, allowing devices to communicate over either protocol. IPv4 has been the primary IP protocol for decades, but with the vast growth of connected devices, the supply of available IP addresses is limited. IPv6 solves this issue with a much larger pool of IP addresses. By running both stacks simultaneously, a dual-stack network allows smooth communication across both IPv4 and IPv6, allowing for compatibility with older systems while future-proofing your network.

Hardware and Software Requirements

The only essential hardware needed to implement a dual-stack network is a router that can support both IPv4 and IPv6 protocols. If your existing router doesn’t have this capability, it may need an upgrade. Beyond this, no extra specialist software or networking devices are typically needed. As long as your current system and equipment are fairly modern, they should be perfectly capable of handling dual-stack functionality without a hitch.
